Ceramic Art - Raku Pottery
Description
This bowl was created from an actual leaf which was growing on the side of a bike path. I have no idea what kind of leaf it is. It was embedded into the clay and carefully removed, trimmed and placed inside a wok to dry. It was fired to cone 06, glazed with a copper matte, then raku fired.
Raku is an ancient from of Japanese pottery firing. This process that uses both fire and smoke to create unique patterns and designs. With raku pottery, the piece is first bisque fired. Then, it is glazed and undergoes a raku firing process. The raku firing process requires a special raku kiln that is fueled by propane and reaches temperatures of about 1800F. The raku pottery is then removed from the kiln using specially designed raku tongs. It is then placed inside a metal can full of combustible materials. The heat emitted from the raku pottery causes these materials to catch on fire. The smoldering piece is removed after 15 minutes and scrubbed to reveal the completed work.
