Ceramic Art - Raku Clay And Glaze
Description
This wall piece was created with an actual botanical sample which was impressed into a prepared slab of raku clay. When removed, the item is coated lightly with a copper matte raku glaze and fired. The unglazed areas turn black, thus creating the color contrast. The metallic colors that result, are always unpredictable and exciting after the piece is removed from its reduction chamber.
Raku is an ancient from of Japanese pottery firing. This process that uses both fire and smoke to create unique patterns and designs. With raku pottery, the piece is first bisque fired. Then, it is glazed and undergoes a raku firing process. The raku firing process requires a special raku kiln that is fueled by propane and reaches temperatures of about 1800°F. The raku pottery is then removed from the kiln using specially designed raku tongs. It is then placed inside a metal can full of combustible materials. The heat emitted from the raku pottery causes these materials to catch on fire. The smoldering piece is removed after 15 minutes and scrubbed to reveal the completed work.
