Description
Annhingas are prevalent on the lake in my backyard. These “snake birds” stick their long thin necks out of the water while fishing which of course, looks just like a snake and they dry their wings spread out on the lakeside until they can fly again. The tree trunks in the wooded background are an optical illusion. Are they white trees or dark trees? Is it night or day? Birds here in Florida are so different from New England. I am always fascinated with them! I could watch them for hours and forget about my problems.
I used the mask technique for the tree trunks. I wanted many trunks portraying the woods behind my lake. However, when I removed the masking tape, I got the opposite of what I was expecting! Even with two layers of paint...it was difficult to decipher the trunks from my background. So whatever you see first is what was meant to be.The inked over bird was printed on photo paper. Photo paper is non-porous so the alcohol ink worked very well on the surface. The original photo was taken with my iPhone The substrate is white board which is also non-porous and is a discovery I’ve shared with my students. Many mistakes can be altered and improved upon with the swipe of an alcohol pad.
